The Santa Monica Chorus

The Santa Monica Chorus is a chapter of Sweet Adelines International. Our chorus has the distinct honor of being the oldest Sweet Adelines chapter west of the Rocky Mountains. We received our charter on July 25, 1949, only four years after the founding of Sweet Adelines International. However, we don't feel old! We are proud to be the current Champions of Region 11 and we are looking forward to representing our Region in the Sweet Adelines International Competition to be held in October 2017 in Las Vegas, Nevada, where we will match our singing skills against 33 other Choruses from around the world.

Laura Pallas has been our Director for 30 years.  She is an accomplished musician, performer, and regional and international competitor who specializes in vocal production and technique. She holds an M.F.A. in Vocal Pedagogy, is a member of the Sweet Adelines Regional Faculty, and was  awarded the title of "Master Director" in 2009 for scoring 620 points at the Region 11 Contest. She coaches quartets and choruses around the country. Laura also sang lead in the internationally competitive quartet, Naturally, Region 11 Quartet Champions in 2005.

The Santa Monica Chorus loves to perform and entertain. That has been true for more than 60 years of singing and sharing our exciting barbershop sound. We can be heard throughout the year, singing for civic and charitable organizations, private groups, churches, community events, and fundraisers. We love to entertain by putting on our own musical events each year for the community, our friends, and families. We love caroling during the holidays at local malls as well in our own holiday shows and fundraisers.

We send “singing telegrams” on Mother’s Day and we also recently participated proudly at the City of Santa Monica's Memorial Day Service at Woodlawn Cemetery. It was a joy singing "Proud to Be an American" as the airplanes flew in formation over our heads. There wasn't a dry eye in the house and it was a great opportunity to connect with the community's civilians as well as the many servicemen and woman who enjoyed our performance.

We have enlisted the participation of some young children from a local school to sing with us at past Christmas performances. And to further enrich and encourage young people to enjoy our Barbershop style of music, we support the Young Women in Harmony program of Sweet Adelines.

In addition to singing in the chorus, many members love to perform in quartets. We currently have five registered quartets in our chorus. This is a testament to the strong commitment to musical excellence of our members. Quarteting is fun but it requires real dedication to perfecting the craft of barbershop singing in order to perform competitively. Check out the Quartet page on our website.

Since our chapter was formed in 1949, we have maintained our goals of teaching and training our members in musical harmony and appreciation. We invest in training for our director, our musical leaders, and administrative staff. We continually strive to be better musicians and improve the quality of our musical product by hiring outside coaches and attending educational seminars sponsored by Sweet Adelines International. Our hard work has been rewarded many times over at regional competitions.

If you're looking for a unique musical experience to liven up your event, please check out our Hire Us section.

In addition to sharing our music with others, another great passion of ours is learning more about the art of a cappella singing. Vocal instruction is a regular part of chorus rehearsals, and a very important component of the chorus experience. A couple of times a year, we will get coaching from a visiting master in the art of barbershop, where we learn many fabulous tricks of the trade.

CompetitionIn the spring of every year, The Santa Monica Chorus participates in the Region11 chorus competition in Bakersfield, CA. Competitions are a special time for quartets and choruses from our region to come together to sing for each other, and get some constructive feedback from a panel of judges. The winners of the regional competition in both quartet and chorus categories get to travel to International Competition, which is held in the fall in a city selected each year. In 2017, International Competition will be held in Las Vegas, NV.

Most choruses have a number of members who form their own vocal quartets in addition to singing with the chorus. Santa Monica Chorus currently is home to a number of wonderful quartets, and we are very proud of them! Go to our Quartets area to learn more about them.

Santa Monica Chorus is a chapter of Sweet Adelines, International, a non-profit organization of approximately 30,000 members in choruses and quartets, worldwide. The Headquarters is in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
